Wind Energy

Growing Wind Farms In Oklahoma and Kansas Two new wind power projects from Wind Capital Group will mean increased job opportunities and benefits to local economies across Oklahoma and Kansas. The projects will use 228 GE wind turbines to produce more than 350 megawatts of clean renewable energy for the Midwestern United States.

IKEA UK Invests In Renewable Energy IKEA UK is undertaking two new major initiatives that will help the home furnishings company reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, offset its carbon emissions, and create more renewable energy for its operations. The projects include the purchase of a wind farm located in North Scotland, as well as the installation and operation of rooftop solar photovoltaic networks.

Optimizing Wind-turbine Placement Increases Power Output The power output of wind farms can be increased by an order of magnitude -- at least tenfold -- simply by optimizing the placement of turbines on a given plot of land, say researchers at the Caltech who have been conducting a unique field study at an experimental two-acre wind farm in northern Los Angeles County.

Monteregie, Quebec Wind Farm to Begin Construction Kruger Energy has announced that it will begin construction of a wind farm in Monteregie, Quebec this August. With a capacity of 100 MW, the project will include 44 wind turbines and provide enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of some 10,000 homes heated by electricity.

Kruger Energy Chatham Wind Farm Kruger Energy, a leading Canadian producer of renewable energy, has flipped the switch on its new 101.2 megawatt wind farm in Chatham-Kent, Ontario. The 44 2.3-MW Mk II wind turbines making up the project will generate enough electricity to power about 30,000 homes in Ontario.

Horizontal and Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines - A Place For Each Visit any large utility-scale wind farm and you're likely to see row upon row of turbines that look like airplane propellers, turning on a horizontal axis. Have you ever wondered why vertical-axis turbines are less common? The stock answer is that vertical-axis turbines are not as efficient as horizontal-axis turbines, and since investors want the highest return on their money, they build whatever will provide the biggest payback.

Wind Power Onboard a Ferry We're used to seeing wind turbines at sea. But typically offshore wind means mammoth towers anchored in place, supporting gigantic horizontal-axis turbines. Stena Line, the European ferry operator, has taken offshore wind in a different direction, with small but effective ship-mounted turbines.

Wind Turbine Obstacle Collision Avoidance System The first North American wind farm with an Obstacle Collision Avoidance System from OCAS is now in full operation at the Talbot Wind Energy Project near Chatham, Ontario. The OCAS solution uses patented radar technology mounted on select turbine towers to detect approaching aircraft and activate both visual and VHF radio warning.

Global Wind Day 2011 On 15 June 2011, Global Wind Day, citizens from around the world can discover the benefits of wind energy while having fun. With Middle East instability affecting oil prices and debate over nuclear following Fukushima, the hundreds of events on offer on Global Wind Day will show people everywhere how wind can be part of a stable, clean energy future.

Delivering Wind Power in Kenya Isolux Corsan has won the tender for the construction of the largest high-voltage electrical transmission line in Kenya and one of the largest in Africa: 428 km long, bearing 400 KV. When complete, the project will enable uploading of the power output from the wind-farm with the greatest installed capacity throughout the African continent, 300 MW.
